The security porfolio is comprised of a subcommittee of highly skilled & passionate individuals who all spend many hours trying to help Blairgowrie residents to create a safer suburb for themselves. They are an amazing group of people who each manage a portfolio that is best suited to their skills & interests within crime prevention & awareness.

There are security zone captains for each of the 4 zones within Blairgowrie & they are responsible for passing on information to their residents, as well as representing their zone’s security concerns to the subcom. These captains will be on your street Whats App groups in order to monitor the security concerns in their areas, as well as inform residents of security initiatives, threats or trends.

- We have a skilled communications expert who is developing the strategies we use to get our messages across to the residents.

- We have members who monitor bylaw infringements including illegal signage & trading, problem properties and sub-station infringements.

- We have two extremely dedicated members who are doing all they can to improve security in Delta Park & to ensure our suburb’s most valuable asset is kept safe & secure for us all to enjoy.

- We have members who meet with & monitor our largest security providers in order to work in collaboration with them and SAPS to create the safest environment possible for us all. We also work closely with Linden SAPS & attend weekly external role-players sector meetings.

- We have a member who has implemented a one way communication channel that will be strictly for security alerts & announcements, not just to residents of the suburb, but also to their staff members who are essentially the eyes & ears of the streets when most of us are not at home. We also work with the Domestic Watch group who provide valuable training & education to staff on a monthly basis.

- We have members who have formed a Street Camera & Fiber team, who are currently investigating the most efficient & effective ways for us to incorporate street cameras into a network that can be used to monitor & prevent crimes as well as apprehend criminals.

- And lastly, but perhaps most importantly we have a skilled & passionate member who consolidates the crime stats for Blairgowrie & then breaks them down into relevant categories & analyzes possible trends which are used to measure risks & successes, as well as for tailoring relevant security patrols in known hotspots. These are sent out in the BCA newsletter for residents to view.

The subcom's goal...

We would like to maintain & improve the already great sense of community. The subcom’s ultimate goal is for the residents themselves to stand up & take control of crime in order to make Blairgowrie one of the most sought after & admired suburbs to live in. We have all the tools at hand already, its just a matter of mobilizing the community & educating people to realize that they are in control of their own safety.

We estimate that at least half our crimes are completely preventable by being aware of the risks & trends and just acting with those in mind. If we can eliminate those kinds of crimes it frees up time & effort to act on prevention of serious crimes. The suburb needs to unite against crime & agree to put their individual differences aside in order to act as a collective to really make a difference to our safety & security. Blairgowrie is already becoming a model of community achievements, and is on the path to the successful elimination of crime to become something that leads our neighboring suburbs to follow in our path & thereby really make a difference in the overall fight against crime

Jed-Kemery-ChairpersonWhat does my portfolio entail?

Sometimes anything and everything! I’m happy to say I was one of the founding members of the BCA in 2010. From 2010 – 2018, I worked closely with SAPS attending their external role players forum weekly meeting (for 5 years) and played a part on the CPF (Community Policing Forum).

As Chairperson, I have a co-ordinating role on the BCA Committee and am involved directly in a number of portfolios and issues affecting our suburb. I liaise with our 3 Ward Councillors, key role players, businesses and attend meetings with the City and various other relevant groups etc.

I am blessed to have met so many “Blairfolk” over the years and be associated with the Committee, a group of wonderful people, as we try to fit all of this into our daily lives. It’s a great honour, tiring and challenging at times but immensely rewarding at the end of the day seeing this suburb grow from strength to strength.

Why I love Blairgowrie and what I really want to say.

This is a suburb on the rise. We’re central, green and leafy and have some of the loveliest people in Joburg. We’re a family here. We don’t always get along but we, generally, all make up and work towards a common goal. I love that there are so many residents who are active in the suburb and many have been working tirelessly on Blairgowrie for years and years before I even discovered this great place.

I’d like to encourage everyone to accept that none of us are superheroes or in possession of any kind of magic to have done what we’ve done in Blairgowrie. It wasn’t easy to concern ourselves with others and step out of our homes and comfort zones. The Committee doesn’t own you. The Committee isn’t the boss of you. We’ve been mandated by the suburb to get on and do a job (to guide you) as best we can. Sometimes we mess up or drop the ball but we’re always grateful to those that hold us accountable and make us rethink our approach.

So … take an interest, notice things, live without blinkers. We spent so many years in this country building our walls and hiding. Come out and play. If people see us enjoying our suburb, taking an interest, using the parks and facilities, keeping things clean, they will know we know what’s going on around us. This behaviour from residents has amazing consequences: new business investment in the area, the City taking us seriously, shunning would-be criminals looking for suburbs that just don’t care. Above all – get involved and remember “DOT” – “Do One Thing” – anything!!

What’s my day job?

Other than helping to run the BCA, I am Principal and Owner of my own real estate agency  - Neighbourhood Real Estate - operating in the area and Joburg Northern suburbs.
