Joburg City Parks: CLOSED

Parks and Nature Reserves remain closed. This includes Delta Park and any park even without fencing.

Notices advising park users that facilities are closed are being put up in parks and nature reserves and where possible play and outdoor fitness equipment will be cordoned off with danger tape. Residents who are illegally accessing facilities that are not fenced, are reminded that they are transgressing regulations promulgated as part of the Disaster Management Action and that they could be fined.

Grass cutting and tree issues will be suspended for the entire period, however employees will be on standby to attend to any fallen trees.

PIKITUP:

Still operating but stay in touch with the City or your Cllr to see if there are changes to the schedule or frequency.

  • Please sanitise the handle of the bin BEFORE you take it out. This is to help protect the workers from infection.
  • Please sanitise the handle BEFORE you bring it in. The workers touch approximately 2000 bins a day, making them a possible coronavirus hotspot.
  • As well-meaning as it may be, you are encouraged NOT to leave a tin of food or bar of soap etc. on your bin as a thank you or to assist the workers. The City has cited the possible spread of the virus through this gesture.

Recycling and Garden Refuse Depots:

Many are still operational but you can keep checking.

  • Recycling depot at “Ferndale on Republic” (old Brightwater Commons) – CLOSED
  • Pikitup Garden and Recycling site in Parkhurst / Greenside – OPEN. (0860 562 874)
  • Bryanston Garden site – CLOSED
  • You can Google 'COJ recycling and garden refuse sites' which will give you more sites but CHECK if they’re open. Do not take the Operational Hours to be factual at this point

Social Grants:

You can still collect your grant during the lockdown.

To try and stop the spread of the coronavirus, SASSA is helping people avoid crowds.

Payment will be as follows:

30 and 31 March: Old Age and Disability grants will be paid. This is ahead of the rest of the grants so that the elderly and those with a disability don’t have to stand in long queues. Less people will then have to queue at grant payment centres later (SAPO, Postbank, Merchants, commercial banks, pay points, etc.).

1 April onwards: Child Support, Foster Care, War Veterans and other grants will be paid.

If you are able to wait a bit longer before you collect your grant, please do, so you can protect yourself and others from the coronavirus. (Grants are in your account for at least three months from the date of payment.)

Carry your ID and your SASSA card or bank card (for those who do not use the SASSA card).

From Monday, 30 March to Friday, 3 April, buses and taxis can run from 05h00-20h00 (more information to follow).
